Ancillary techniques on the evaluation of canine cutaneous mast cell tumors from Brazil Ciência Rural
Flores,Mariana Martins; Mazaro,Renata Dalcol; Langohr,Ingeborg Maria; Roy,Alma; Strother,Keith; Fighera,Rafael Almeida.
ABSTRACT: The use of histologic classification by a 2-tier grading system only, immunohistochemistry (IHC) for KIT and Ki-67 and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for internal tandem duplications (ITD) on exon 11 has improved the prognostication of canine cutaneous mast cell tumors (CCMTs) particularly in the United States. However, these techniques are not commonly used in most Brazilian laboratories. Likewise, no studies, to date, have investigated the occurrence of ITD in CCMTs from the country. Thus, this study tested the 2-tier grading system, the immunohistochemistry for KIT and Ki-67 and the PCR for exon 11 in a group of Brazilian CCMTs with the goal of investigating the applicability of these tests in a Brazilian laboratory. Of the 39 CCMTs, 69.2%...

Association of nucleolar organizing regions and Ki-67 expression with recurrence rate of hair follicle tumor in dogs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Souza,P.C.; Ocarino,N.M.; Tavares,W.L.F.; Boeloni,J.N.; Cassali,G.D.; Serakides,R..
Mitotic index, nuclear diameter, number of nucleolar organizing regions, and Ki-67 expression, in hair follicle tumors of 82 dogs were evaluated. Tissue specimens were used to prepare sections for histological staining for number of nucleolar organizing region and immunohistochemical staining for Ki-67. Tumors were classified as trichoblastoma (n=32), benign trichoepithelioma (n=30), pilomatricoma (n=7), malignant trichoepithelioma (n=6), infundibular keratinizing acanthoma (n=5), and tricholemmoma (n=2). Head, dorsum, and limbs were the most affected sites. Malignant trichoepithelioma presented significantly higher mitotic index, number of nucleolar organizing regions and Ki-67 expression. Regarding benign neoplasms, trichoblastoma presented significantly...

Comparison of Proliferative Activity of Epithelial Cells between the Follicles of Impacted Teeth International Journal of Morphology
Kömerik,Nurgül; Tufan,Alper; Kapucuoglu,Nilgün.
The aim of this comparative observational study was to compare the proliferative activity of dental follicles surrounding impacted maxillary canines and mandibular third molars. Following extraction, forty follicles of the impacted mandibular third molars and 40 follicles of the impacted maxillary canines were removed. Epithelial cell proliferative activity of these samples was assessed using immunohistochemical labeling for Ki-67, minichromosome maintenance 2 (MCM-2) protein and epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR). Intensity and extent of Ki-67, MCM-2 and EGFR expressions were evaluated by a scoring formula. The lining epithelium of the maxillary canine follicles had mean scores of 4.65±0.27 for Ki-67, 1.25±0.33 for MCM-2 and 7.30±0.23 for EGFR which...

Outcome of adjuvant chemotherapy with lomustine, vinblastine and chlorambucil on management of canine mast cell tumour of high to intermediate risk Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Horta,R.S.; Lavalle,G.E.; Costa,M.P.; Moura,L.L.; Marcinowska,A.; Araújo,R.B..
ABSTRACT In spite of the many available protocols, the use of chemotherapy for the management of canine mast cell tumours (MCT) remains empirical, and there is lack of criteria for the choice of protocol and definition of patients who may benefit from treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the outcome of dogs with MCT after adjuvant chemotherapy according to the risk of recurrence or metastasis proposed on the literature. This prospective study included 89 followed up dogs with prognosis assesment including clinical, histological, immunohistochemical and genetic features of canine MCT. Patients were grouped according to risk of recurrence and metastasis and recommended treatment with lomustine followed by chlorambucil if considered at...

Protective Effect of Momordica cochinchinensis (L.) Spreng Aril Extract on Essential Testicular Markers in Rats Induced with Valproic Acid International Journal of Morphology
Sitthichai,Iamsaard; Wannisa,Sukhorum; Apichakarn,Sampannang; Bungorn,Sripanidkulchai.
Valproic acid (VPA), an anti-epileptic drug, has been reported to cause male sub/infertility. Together with searching for alternative treatments, the degrees to which testosterone levels and sperm quality are decreased under VPA treatment also need to be clarified. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of Momordica cochinchinensis (MC) aril extract containing antioxidant capacity on adverse reproductive parameters induced with VPA. Rats were divided into 6 groups (control, VPA, 200 mg kg-1 of MC only, 50, 100, 200 mg kg-1 MC+VPA, respectively, n=8 in each). Animals were pretreated with MC extract for 23 days before co-administration with VPA (500 mg kg-1, i.p.) for 10 consecutive days. All reproductive parameters including histology, and...
